Vula Roumis
Vula Roumis
Vula grew up in Boston and Newton as the daughter of very active and involved immigrant parents in the Greek community. She later settled in Stoughton MA with her husband and two children. She completed a double major at Simmons College in International Business and Political Science. Her real passion was found early on in teaching, and she went on to complete her Master’s in Applied Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. Recently retired, she spent the last 26 years in the same school district; starting as an elementary school E.S.L teacher, then as an Educational Coach supporting new teachers through trainings, observations and one-on-one mentoring, and finally as a Department Head overseeing elementary and middle school language teachers, and programs for 10 years. In addition, Vula taught graduate level education and language courses at the University of Massachusetts and for Fitchburg State. She initially taught and then held the position of Coordinator for the Stoughton Adult E.S.L Education Programs for over 7 years. She was a certified teacher trainer for the Mass. Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education (MADESE) throughout her career.
Her involvement with the Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (HNRC) and HWBA goes back many years, first accompanying her own parents when they volunteered and attended their events throughout the year. Most recently as the primary caregiver of close family members at HNRC, she continues to champion and advocate for the elderly and looks forward to bringing her experiences working with vulnerable populations to further strengthen the work of HWBA in caring for and valuing our elders.
